Medicare For All Lies
Medicare for All will save lives, and we can afford it. That’s the bottom line. It is broadly accepted that a moral and just nation would take care of everyone that is in need of care. This axiom is doubly true for the richest, most powerful nation in human history. However, rich and powerful humans want American workers on their knees. They are trying to break all of us using the economy as a weapon to place our families in danger. They are paying people to lie about Medicare for All. We have to stand against these people. This article will provide all the information you need to fight!
As we all know, medical bills are the number one factor for bankruptcy in the United States. 44% of American report that medical bills have had a negative impact on their finances, regardless of insurance status in the past year. 59% say they or someone in their household had used up most or all of their savings on medical costs during the last 12 months. Over the course of a year, 34% of people say that they have had difficulties paying for basic necessities, like food and housing. There is no excuse to allow people to lose everything or even die. Tweet this! The people fighting the passage of this legislation are morally bankrupt.
Fighting the Lies
Medicare for All Lie #5- No Votes
This position is craven. When someone says this they mean “the Republicans are mean and rich people want to kill the legislation.” Tweet this! The only choice is to roll into the fetal position and hope we don’t get hurt trying to help people. This is infuriating. There is only one way to guarantee passage of a bill is to flood Congress and the White House with legal bribes we call campaign contributions. For We the People, our only path is to Fight! Tweet this! We have to make it clear to any and every candidate that wants to represent us MUST support #MedicareForAll. No exceptions. If they want our votes, they will comply.
This stance is also disingenuous. No standard says you must have the votes to pursue legislation. Lobbyists and think tanks hand potential legislation to members of Congress all the time that has ZERO support votes. You go out and build support. There is a position in each party called a Whip. Gathering votes for bills is their entire job. Voters supply pressure, not whip votes. So don’t fall for this one. Just keep making the demand!
Medicare for All Lie #4- We Can’t Afford It
All too often you will hear “We can’t afford it?” Of course, this question is never asked about tax cuts for rich people or corporations. But, I digress. A recent study from the University of Massachusetts Amherst stated that Medicare for All will actually save $5.1 Trillion. We can’t afford not to do it. Here’s a link to a pdf of the study. This finding is at the bottom of page three. Below is a helpful graphic that you can share.
Medicare for All Lie #3- How Do You Pay for it?
Adjacent to Lie #4 is “How Do You Pay For It?” Our Modern Monetary Theory friends will often tell us that everything we do is basically on credit. For this article, we will use more conventional methods. The people who parrot this talking point are implying that Bernie Sanders “has no plan.” But, our favorite grumpy old man saw this coming and made sure to take care of this concern. He even has a transition plan worked into the Senate bill.
Medicare for All Lie #2- Not Everyone Is Covered
Despite the fact that the word “ALL” is in the title, liars will still say that people will be left out. That is completely untrue. M4A is a universal program. Everyone in, no one out. Full stop. Here is the text directly from the Senate bill.
SEC. 102. UNIVERSAL ENTITLEMENT.
(a) In General.—Every individual who is a resident of the United States is entitled to benefits for health care services under this Act. The Secretary shall promulgate a rule that provides criteria for determining residency for eligibility purposes under this Act.
(b) Treatment Of Other Individuals.—The Secretary may make eligible for benefits for health care services under this Act other individuals not described in subsection (a), and regulate the nature of eligibility of such individuals, while inhibiting travel and immigration to the United States for the sole purpose of obtaining health care services.
The summary in the House is straightforward and direct. Everyone and everything is covered.
Medicare for All Lie #1- There is No Legislation
This fabrication is a silly one because Tweet this! anyone can go to Congress(dot)gov and see the legislation for themselves and track its progress. This is a way to make people feel foolish, and it is also a way to send people down a rabbit hole on Google and waste your time.
There are a few different versions of the plan. However, the ones we will discuss are the national bills. Both the House of Representatives and the Senate have versions of the bill.
The House version was introduced in January 2017. It is H.R.676 — 115th Congress (2017-2018) It was sponsored by Rep. John Conyers (D) of Michigan’s 13th District. Here is a link to the Summary and the text of the Bill. Here is a list of the 123 Cosponsors in the House.
In September of 2017, Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced S.1804 – Medicare for All Act of 2017. Here is a link to the full text. There is no summary. Here are the bill’s 16 Senators that are Cosponsors for the bill.
